Geek Fuel January 2016 Mystery Box Review

Every mystery box includes an EXCLUSIVE T-shirt you won’t find anywhere else. You also get a full downloadable game and the latest issue of the Geek Fuel Magazine. Geek Fuel Mystery Boxes are packed with a guaranteed $50 minimum value every month. Gear from Star Wars, Avengers, Doctor Who, Super Mario Bros, Marvel, DC and more.

Let me start off my review by saying I'm reviewing the subscription box from an honest, normal consumer's opinion. I'm not reviewing the individual products in the box. I review the box so that you can decide if this is something you'd like to subscribe to. As for the products, if a product stands out, good or bad, I will make a separate review for that product/brand.

When you first open your Geek Fuel box & the paper, all the paperwork is on the top. There is the info card, the Geek Fuel mag, and often a contest. This month it's a Fuel the Flash contest to win an XBox One & other prizes.

I didn't win. :-(

The Geek fuel mag is a half-size publication that contains features & reviews of games, cosplay, TV shows, & youtubers. It also explains in depth some of the items in the box.

The info card is nicely done. It explains each item included in this month's box, and why.

Geek Fuel is not a themed box. I've seen reviews where people get upset because they don't understand the theme 7 why certain items are included with others. Their website clearly states that they do not do monthly themes.

Info Card
January's box contained 6 items:
  • A Brief History in Time Travel Exclusive T-shirt
  • Starlabs Coffee Mug
  • Unbrella Enamel Pin
  • Metro Warp Downloadable Steam Game
  • 8-Bit Breath Savers & Collectible Tin
  • Jakku Comic-Con Poster

This is our 4th Geek Fuel Box. I originally signed up for a 6-month sub. We'll prbably renew since this one always has something for everyone in it.

My son gets the downloadable Steam games each month. Sometimes he's heard of them, sometimes like this month, he hasn't. He hasn't been able to try this game out yet. We have limited bandwidth, so we have to wait until we go to the city to download stuff. He always enjoys the games, and gets at least the $10-$15 value from them each month.

Breath Mints

I received the Link 8-Bit breath Savers & Collectible Tin. Yay! I used to play the hell out of that game on the NES.....or was it the SNES. Pfft. I can't remember. Oh well. I'm old.

Coffee Mug & Pin

The next item I received in the box was a StarLabs Coffee Mug. StarLabs is a scientific research lab in the DC Comics universe. And of course, The Flash is a DC character. It's a nice mug...... if you like DC Comics. Personally it will go on my wall with my coffee cup collection.

The enamel pin is representative of the Umbrella corporation in the Resident Evil games. My son plays those, so he'll be keeping the pin. Probably as decoration on his desk.

Jakku Comic-Con
OK. I'm going to admit my ignorance here. Jakku Intergalactic Comic-Con poster? Not getting it. But then again, I'm more of a closet geek. I think I read it's Star Wars. That's real popular right now, so I can see why it was enclosed!

Exclusive T-shirt
The last item in the box is Geek Fuel's exclusive T-shirt. It's a brief history of time travel. You've got The Time Machine, Dr. Who, Back to the Future, Bill & Ted, The Terminator, & Hot Tub Machine represented here. I like this. It's cool. I have read that this same shirt was given out last year in the Geek Fuel boxes..... that's not so cool.

Overall we;ve been very happy with Geek Fuel. Unfortunately this month seemed a bit light for some reason. It had 6 items, but nothing was really a big-ticket item this month. I guess this adds up to their promised "$50 minimum value", but it just.... I don't know. Like I said, we've been really happy with the boxes so far, and will continue to subscribe. We've tried our hand at a bunch of geek boxes, and this one is one of the best by far.
