Raw Spice Bar December 2015 Subscription Box Review

This was my first month of RawSpiceBar. I've heard contradictory reviews about them. Problems with typos & recipe discrepancies. Everything seems to be fine to me.

I decided to try RawSpiceBar because I don't cook. It's not that I can't. I have a shelf full of cookbooks, kitchen gadgets in all corners, but I just don't have any inspiration. And forget about using spices. I'm such a novice, it's sad. I hoped getting packets of spices with recipes every month would be inspiring. December was so hectic however, it's been put off.  I also had an awesome Black Friday coupon which was only $1 for your first month. Duh, I couldn't pass that up!

RawSpiceBar is sent in a sturdy, unasuming brown envelope around the 15th of the month. It is shipped first class, so it doesn't have tracking or anything...but then again, it's only $6. It wouldn't be worth it.

Each month they send 3 envelopes with themed spice blends. The spices are ground a few days before shipping, and come in brown paper envelopes. It's enough to make 3 dishes, serving 4-6 people each.

Included in the shipping envelope is colorful printed recipes for your spices, with an explanation of the theme. These recipes of course are only recommendations. They also have a number of recipes on their website/blog to use with your spices including vegetarian dishes.

This month's theme was Norwegian.

The spice packets included:
  • Gingerbread Spices- .4 oz.
  • Winter Herbs- .4 oz
  • Gravlax Spices- .4 oz.
The packets list the ingredients in each blend.

The recipes for this month were:
  • Nordic Caraway Gravlax
  • Pepparkakor
  • Potato Herb Gratin

Winter Herbs
The Winter Herbs contain tarragon, sage, white peppercorns, thyme, allspice, black peppercorns, garlic, and marjoram. You use this spice with the Potato Herb Gratin.

Gravlax Spices

The Gravlax spices include caraway seeds, white peppercorns, and coriander. Unfortunately since this has caraway, I cannit use it. I'm sure I can find someone to hand it off to! This blend, of course, is paired with the Nordic Caraway Gravlax.

Gingerbread Spices
The last packet is the Gingerbread Spices. Oh yum, you should smell this! It contains ginger, coriander, mace, cardamom, star anise, black peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I don't think I'll make the Pepparkakor (Nordic Ginger Cookies) from the printed page with this as I just made some for Christmas. I think I'll go with the bread pudding online. Mmmm...

Since I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, I cannot give an honest opinion on the actual contents of the RawSpiceBar monthly box. However, I did receive what was promised, customer service was very quick & helpful, and for $6 a month I think I'll keep this one. I'm happy so far & can't wait until next month!
