Chick season rolls around one spring. You decide you'll get a couple backyard chickens for fresh eggs. You bring the little peepers home in their cardboard box, and diligently take care of the little fluffy butts into their 'teens'. They begin to develop personalities & colorful feathers. You fall hopelessly in love. Your egg-laying chickens have now become pets. They sit on your lap, you have cooing conversations with them, and you give them treats. When one becomes sick or hurt, you worry. You help. You're also addicted. By next chick season, your flock of 3 now turns into 30. It's OK. We've all been there.
Pets. Yes, chickens can be pets. I constantly talk about my chickens, ducks, geese, pheasants, guineas, & turkeys on my Deer Tales page. They're part of the family. Most people don't think of chickens as pets, but to us homesteaders, they're as much pets as dogs, cats, or fish.
