Doodle Crate March 2016 Box Review & Coupon

Doodle Crate is a mystery craft box geared towards kids 9-16+. They Deliver DIY projects to build creative confidence every month, and Inspire the young maker in your life and give the gift of creative fun.

March's crate was Make your own Pencil Holders & Handmade Pencils.
It comes with just about everything you need to make the craft. How cool is that?!

Included in the box is:
  • Papers
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Dowel
  • Fan Brush
  • Painbrush
  • Pencil Leads
  • Gloss Varnish
  • Glue
  • Air-dry Clay
  • Paint
You'll also need: Cup of water, pencil, paper plate, and a ziptop bag.

The instructions come in booklet form. It's very easy to follow with lots of color photographs. There's also a URL for a video tutorial if you'd like to watch that.

There are many project ideas in the booklet, as well as inspiration on making your own project. On the back page of the booklet, it gives social media hashtags for you to upload your finished project, and see others as well.

Also in the instruction booklet are little tidbits of trivia about pencils.

They sent a package of papers fro making the pencils. There are 10 sheets of circle patterns in two different color combinations.

The kit also comes with a fan brush, and a large paintbrush for painting whichever project you choose. You also get a strip of paints.

Included is a tube of colored 'lead' for the pencils you'll be making. There are 10 colors. One of mine was broken, :-(

A container of glue, gloss varnish, a dowel (for making your holes in the pencil holder), and a pencil sharpener are also inside the box. It's great that these items are included because not all families would have everything here.

The final item in the box, is Air-dry paper clay. Two 8oz packages. That's a good amount of clay! This clay hardens when exposed to air, so you need to keep your clay moist as you're working with it. That means that this is a messy project.

This isn't a project you can complete quickly as there is a lot of wait time. The clay needs to dry & harden, the 2 coats of paint need to dry, and the varnish needs time to dry. So this is a project you'll work on in steps.

I think this is a real neat project. Many tweens would enjoy making this, whether boy or girl. We've gotten a few of their boxes and have been rather pleased with each one.
